I've been writing a book on and off for a few years now.
It's actually been one of the toughest things I've done (tougher than my Masters Degree!) and one of the lonliest processes I've ever been involved in.
The title of the book:-
"The Lonely
Walk".
How to lead yourself when no one is watching.
The walk to the ring is lonely.
So is building a life that matters.
So why do I tell you this....?
During my time working at
Team Ricky Hatton we were riding high.
Our fighters were winning fights.
British titles.
Commonwealth and European Champions.
We were on a roll.
Then out of nowhere - BANG.
One of our star champions is beaten.
Knocked out cold.
And it was
completely unexpected.
We had done the prep, and ticked all of the boxes.
But we had to figure out what went so badly wrong.
And then the boxer made a statement that delivered a knockout blow to both me and the team.
He said that walking to the ring felt like 'the loneliest place in the world'.
His self talk had abandoned
him.
Nerves, fear and anxiety had coursed through his veins.
And he was beaten before the fight had even begun.
It massively made me think, and became the influence for my book.
Now you may not be walking to a boxing ring to fight anytime soon.
But you do face your own 'lonely walk' pretty much each and every
day.
- Tough times in your personal life.
- Difficult conversations with clients.
- Pitching to try and win that latest piece of business that you absolutely need to stay afloat or to hit target.
I'm sure I could go on?
And poor self talk, nerves, fear, anxiety as well as other feelings are something that you may have
experienced quite often?
Now with our boxer - we set to work.
We made changes to ensure he came back stronger.
We coached him.
Guided him.
And we gave him the toolkit to ensure that he was more than well equipped to face this situation again.
But yourself...?
Let me ask you
this:-
When did you last give yourself the time, energy, and investment to cope with your own lonely walk?
When was the last time you trained yourself to not only cope but to thrive?
When was the last time you invested in your own toolkit?
Now I'm not here to have a go at you.
But the facts are the facts, and as the old saying
goes:-
"If you do what you always did, you will get what you always got".
Whereas my challenge for you is this....
It's time for you to change.
It's time for you to be more.
It's time for you to do more.
It's time for you to get more.
But that requires investment.
And putting yourself first.
So either talk about it, or do.
Speak soon.
