People hear the word discipline and switch off.
Or maybe that was just me.
Sounds boring.
No fun.
Get a life.
Were stories I’d almost instantly say to myself.
But do you know what’s boring?
Waking up with a bad back because your body is ageing rapidly
because you’re not training properly.
Handing over a tonne of cash to a physio (sorry Doug and all the magicians at Altius, you’re an absolute investment )for problems you could’ve helped to prevent or improve the healing quicker.
Looking in the mirror and hating what you see because you’ve no confidence in how you look or how you perform if you needed to.
Turning up for something that matters such as a fight, a competition, a match, a meeting, a big day at work, and
knowing deep down you’re winging it. You’re filled with regret because you know you’ve cut corners, you’re not ready and you could have done more.
That’s what’s boring.
It also compounds and ultimately makes you miserable.
You see, whether you like it or not, here’s the cold hard truth:
Discipline isn’t about sucking the fun out of your life.
Instead, it’s about building the foundations that let you
enjoy it more.
Discipline gives you freedom.
Freedom to enjoy a pint or a night out because you know you’ve done the work.
Freedom to move well, feel strong, and not live in pain.
Discipline gives you control.
When the pressure is on, you know in your mind and your body that you’re ready.
No blagging.
No pretending.
Just the Mastery (good name eh, watch this space for more on
that) and the confidence that you’ve built by doing the reps every day.
And that confidence…
It’s a game changer.
So, these days when people moan or tell me that discipline is boring.
I laugh.
And then I push back.
Because the reality is simple:
Discipline costs you something today.
But a lack of it will cost you far more tomorrow.
As I always
say….
“SHORT TERM PAIN = LONG TERM PLEASURE”.
